An Interview with...

Heike Schnell

Founder of Wellicious

By Clare Heighway - 18th November 2014

We chat with Heike Schnell, the founder of luxury and eco-friendly workout & yoga clothing brand Wellicious about how she manages a work/life balance and what inspires her.

Tell us about yourself, Heike.

I live in the beautiful Notting Hill area with my husband and three daughters. I previously worked in PR and business management, and have always had a passion for luxury products and high-quality. Plus I love to buy into the ever growing organic market! So when I began Wellicious it only made sense to create the brand following on from my passions! London definitely inspired me with the city’s exciting buzz! My day to day life is super busy, balancing work and family, but when I get the chance I love to go for picnics & walks in the London parks with my family and during winter we all head to Austria for a nice ski break in the Alps.

Where did the idea for Wellicious come from?

I wanted to create a modern eco-friendly but stylish brand: to make something that could provide customers with high-quality luxe pieces, but something that wouldn’t damage the environment! The name for Wellicious itself actually came to me at 3am in the middle of the night! I woke up suddenly with the concept of Wellicious, and never looked back! I think it came as a result from a brainstorming session we had had that afternoon, combining wellbeing and delicious!

Who's your ideal customer?

She is an urban woman, who knows what she wants and often thinks green, eats green and lives green - meaning she is aware of the environment around her. She would be around 25-60 years old, and is someone who doesn’t let life get her down. She may have a family, be career-minded or both! Wellicious is an eco-friendly, honest, non-judgemental brand and therefore we don’t like to specify too much ‘who’ our ideal customer is, or ‘what’ they should be, and prefer to put our focus into making our brand a brand that people love!

What has been your biggest challenge?

I would say juggling an international business whilst being a mother to three small children all under the age of 5. I have to make sure to find a good balance between work times and play time.

What has been your biggest highlight?

Every day there is a new highlight in our office through various things; be it an exciting new press feature with Vogue, or a breakthrough in a high quality sustainable fabric! Plus receiving excellent customer service feedback is always lovely to hear. Also we recently had Selena Gomez, Sadie Frost and Fearne Cotton wearing our collections and to see that in the press was obviously an amazing feeling!

What are you inspired by?

Strong women. I love the modern empowered woman who is not afraid to stand up and speak her mind and be confident with her own ideas.

Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs?

If you believe in what you are doing, then never give up! There will always be days where you feel like everything is going wrong and that maybe your idea has failed, but don’t let these days beat you. If you truly believe in your idea, like I do with Wellicious, then you must stick at it and show other people what you see.

Do you have any favourite British brands?

I always like to discover new British brands, but at the moment I am in love with Rude Health’s porridge Little Butterfly for their beautiful baby products, Eva Sonaike for her interior design and lastly Gooey for modern products!

What do you think is important in developing a successful British brand?

To stay positive and determined, it’s such a tough market but when you break it, it’s really worth your hard work!! Always look on the bright side and just keep going.

How do you manage the work/life balance?

As mentioned before I really do believe this is essential. I have a great team within Wellicious who I trust and feel happy to leave running the brand whilst I enjoy time with my family. However, dedication and motivation are key if you really want to succeed with your business. It won’t just happen overnight, hard work is definitely needed. I also find that my twenty minutes of yoga to get me ready for the day really helps me relax and awaken my mind.

What are your plans for the future?

We have many plans! We are currently focusing on the launch of our brand new silk accessories range which should be online by the beginning of December. Plus we are working on a brand new modern website which will be such an upgrade for customers regarding its functionality and usability. Then in 2015 with our Spring Summer collection we will be launching our first ever range of beautiful Mala jewellery. So as you can tell there are lots of exciting projects on the way!
