Stuart Mactavish
M.D of Seascape
By Clare Heighway - 21st July 2015
We chat to Stuart Mactavish, M.D of Jersey bodycare brand Seascape.
Tell us about how Seascape started.
I'd like to take credit for the concept, but unfortunately I can't. A very talented Jersey resident came up with it - taking inspiration from the islands most stunning seascape and combining that with ingredients specific to Jersey.
You use locally sourced produce and herbs from Jersey in your products. Has there been any big challenges regarding this?
Apart from the weather, no! Poor weather can impact on yields of some of the ingredients we use, but we still get everything we need from local suppliers.
We also have a rather unique way of working with our suppliers with an percentage to sales agreement ensuring we grow together.
What has been your most rewarding experience?
The most rewarding aspect of Seascape has been the reception our collection receives. The feedback on our branding, formulations, value for money, and product performance is unanimous - everyone loves Seascape!
Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs on building a successful business?
Wow - where to begin! Actually, it has to start with a great product. If you have a strong point of difference, and/or a great value proposition, and a strong brand ethos you can go from there.
However, you must have patience as success doesn't happen overnight - but if you have a good product at the correct price point, and most importantly believe in it, you'll eventually get your slice of the pie!
What or who are you inspired by?
Hard work, honesty, fairness, unselfishness, posiveness, and a 'can do' attitude. My wife has all of these - and more.
Do you have any favourite British brands?
Seascape Island Apothecary! One can also learn a lot from observing great British brands and how the 'being British' element is such a strong part of their story. We are very proud to be 100% British - and this has held us in good stead already in the early stages of growth.
However, you can't just say it - you have to mean it and BE it!
How do you spend your time when you’re not working?
A little exercise, listening to music - I love going to the smaller music venues, and enjoying the company of my wife, friends and family.
